Skin care during winter

Does your skin feel warm though winter has arrived?

Winter climate is likely to make your skin dry... This winter take care of your skin and body through few health tips:

Use a plain moisturizer for skin and Vaseline for lips rather than too fancy creams/moisturizer. Avoid harsh peels, facemasks and alcohol based toners, instead use mild cleansing milk. If you generally have a dry skin, then avoid washing your face too frequently.

Dry winter tends to increase dandruff on scalp. You can apply curd on your scalp an hour before washing your hair. Avoid applying curd during the early mornings and late nights as you may catch a cold.

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and sprouts. They taste really ‘yumm’ during winter...

You may not feel thirsty frequently, so keep drinking water on frequent intervals to keep your body hydrated.

Stages of YOGA. Must see post for everyone.

image

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning to bind the yoke. It is the true union of our will with the will of God.
Our ancient sages have suggested eight stages of Yoga to secure purity of body, mind and soul and final communion with God.
These eight stages are known as Ashtangayoga. The eight stages of Yoga are as follows :

Yama (Social Discipline): Yama means restraint or abstention. It contains five moral practices. They are: Non-violence (Ahimsa), Truthfulness (Satya), Non-stealing (Asteya), Celibacy (Brahmacharya) and Non-acquisitiveness (Aparigraha).

Niyama (Individual Discipline): Rules of conduct towards oneself consist of certain disciplines which are both physical and mental. These are five in number:Cleanliness (Shaucha), Contentment (Santosha), Austerity (Tapas), Self-Study (Svadhyaya) and Surrender to God (Ishvara Pranidhana)

Asana (Postures): Asana means holding the body in a particular posture to bring stability to the body and poise to the mind. The practice of asana brings purity in tubular channels, firmness to the body and vitality to the body and the mind. There are many asanas, but keeping in view a comman's health, 65 asanas have been in practice and will be soon available at this website.

Pranayama (Breath Control): The literal meaning of Pranayama is Breath Control. The aim of practising Pranayama is to stimulate, regulate and harmonize vital energy of the body. Just as a bath is required for purifying the body, so also Pranayama is required for purifying the body. Just as a bath is required to purifying the body, so also Pranayama is required for purifying the mind.

Pratyahara (Discipline of the Senses): The extroversion of the sense organs due to their hankering after worldly objects has to be restrained and directed inwards towards the source of all existence. This process of drawing the sense inwards is Pratyahara or putting the sense under restraint.

Dharana (Concentration): Dharana means focusing the pure mind on one's personal deity or on the individual self. The practice of Dharana helps the mind to concentrate on a particular object.

Dhyana (Meditation): When one sustains and maintains the focus of attention through Dharana unbound by time and space, it becomes Dhyana (Meditation). Deep concentration destroys the Rajas and Tamas Gunas of mind and develops the Satvika Gunas (qualities).

Samadhi (Self-Realisation): The eight and final stage of Yoga is Samadhi. At this stage, one's identity becomes both externally and internally immersed in meditation. The meditator, the act of meditation and the object meditated upon, all the three shed their individual characteristics and merge with one single vision of the entire cosmos. Supreme happiness, fee from pleasure, pain or misery, is experienced. Samadhi is the climax of Dhyana.

10 HEALTHY EATING TIPS FOR KIDS

image

10 HEALTHY EATING TIPS FOR KIDS

1. Food is Fun… Enjoy your food
2. Breakfast is a very important meal
3. Eat lots of different foods every day, variety is the recipe for health 4. Which group would you tip for the top? Base your food on carbohydrates
5. Gimme five! Eat fruits and vegetables with each meal and as tasty snacks!
6. Fat facts. Too much saturated fat is not good for your health
7. Snack attack! Eat regularly and choose a variety of snacks
8. Quench your thirst. Drink plenty of liquids
9. Care for those teeth! Brush your teeth at least twice a day
10. Get moving! Be active every day

Do you remember when you learned to ride a bike? The most important part was getting the balance right. Once you could balance easily, the pedals could turn smoothly, to drive the wheels and get the bike moving.

The same thing is true when it comes to choosing our food. Once we have learned to carefully balance the amounts and types of foods eaten, all the organs in the body will function smoothly and the body will work efficiently.

Following these ten tips will help you stay fit and healthy. It’s as easy as riding a bike, once you’ve got the balance right!

1. Food is Fun… Enjoy your food

Sharing a meal with family and friends at home or at school is a great way to enjoy food. It is fun to see other people’s choice of food -what sandwich fillings do others have? Have you tried having a different filling every day? Check out your lunch box or dinner plate. How many different kinds of fruit and vegetables can you spot?

2. Breakfast is a very important meal

Our bodies always need energy, and after a night’s sleep, energy levels are low. Cars, buses and trains cannot run without fuel. So, whether you are off to school, or out and about at the weekend, start the day with breakfast. Plenty of carbohydrates is just the ticket: try cereal with semi-skimmed milk, fruit or yoghurt, toast or bread, perhaps with lean meats.

3. Eat lots of different foods every day, variety is the recipe for health

You need over 40 different kinds of vitamins and minerals every day for good health. Since there is no single food that contains them all, it is important to balance your daily choices. In fact there are no good or bad foods, so you do not need to miss out on the foods you enjoy. The best way to make sure you get the right balance is to eat a wide variety of foods each day.

4. Which group would you tip for the top? Base your food on carbohydrates

Many people don’t eat enough carbohydrate foods, such as cereals, rice, pasta, potatoes and bread. At least half the calories in your diet should come from these foods, so it is a good idea to include at least one of these at every meal. Try whole-grain bread, pasta and other cereals to give you extra fibre. Have you tried baking your own bread? It’s good fun and smells wonderful!

5. Gimme five! Eat fruits and vegetables with each meal and as tasty snacks!

Fruits and vegetables are among the most important foods for giving us enough vitamins, minerals and fibre. We should all try to eat 5 servings a day. For example, a glass of fruit juice at breakfast, perhaps an apple and banana as snacks and two vegetables at meal times then you have already reached your total. How many different kinds can you spot in the supermarket? Why not try some new ones?

6. Fat facts. Too much saturated fat is not good for your health

Eating too many of those tasty, fatty foods (such as butter, spreads, fried meats and sausages, pies and pastries) might not always be so good for your body. So remember, a big helping of potatoes, but go easy on the butter. Although we need some fats to get all the nutrients we need, it is better for our health if we don’t eat too much of these foods and get knocked off balance. So, if you have a high-fat lunch, choose a low-fat dinner.

7. Snack attack! Eat regularly and choose a variety of snacks

Even if you eat regular meals during the day, there will still be times in between that you feel hungry, especially if you have been very physically active. Snacks can fill the gap, but should not be eaten in place of meals, only as an extra. There are lots of different snacks available. Your choice may be crisps, nuts and other packet snacks, chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits. On other occasions, you may prefer a sandwich, some fresh or dried fruits, or perhaps sticks of vegetables like carrots and celery. Whichever snack you enjoy, remember it is always good to include a variety of different types to keep things in balance.

8. Quench your thirst. Drink plenty of liquids

Did you know that more than half of your weight is just water? So as well as giving your body all the food it needs each day to keep healthy, you need at least 5 glasses of liquids a day. It is particularly important if the weather is very hot or if you have done lots of exercise, to have plenty to drink to prevent dehydration. Usually – but not always – your body will tell you this, by making you feel thirsty. Plain tap water is great of course, but bottled water, fruit juices, tea, soft drinks, milk and so on, can all be okay too.

9. Care for those teeth! Brush your teeth at least twice a day

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Eating foods high in sugar or starches too often during the day can play a part in tooth decay. So don’t nibble foods and sip drinks all day long! However, the best way to keep a nice smile is to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Also, after brushing your teeth at bedtime, don’t eat any food, or drink anything but water!

10. Get moving! Be active every day

Just like a bike may become rusty if it is not used for some time, our muscles and bones need to be kept moving too. Activity is needed to keep your heart healthy and your bones strong. It can also be good fun. Try to include some form of activity every day: it may be just walking to school and running up the stairs. However, games like skipping and football at break times are good for giving the body a workout. Swimming is a particularly good sport for keeping you healthy.

9) Patients with diabetes mellitus are 2-3 times more predisposed to stroke.

10) Stroke can occur due to a disruption in blood supply or due to a blood vessel damage.

Stroke Health Tips:

Diabetes and High Blood Pressure - Having diabetes as well as high blood pressure dramatically increases the risk for having a silent stroke, according to the American Stroke Association. This, in turn, can increase the risk for having a regular stroke. People with high blood pressure and diabetes need to control these chronic conditions to reduce their future stroke risk.

Fruits, Vegetables Protect Against Stroke - Eating fruits and green or yellow vegetables daily may protect against stroke. A 48-year study of 120,321 people found almost-daily consumption of green and yellow vegetables reduced the risk for death from stroke by 26 percent in both men and women, compared with those who ate no vegetables more than once a week. Almost-daily fruit intake reduced the risk by 35 percent in men and 25 percent in women. The study was published in 2003 in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Smoking Boosts Stroke Risk - Men who smoke increase their risk for bleeding stroke every time they light up, says the American Stroke Association. An 18-year study of more than 20,000 men found that those who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day double their stroke risk compared with people who have never smoked or those who've kicked their habits.

Stress and Stroke Risk - People who say they are highly stressed have double the risk for fatal stroke as people who say they are stress-free, according to the American Stroke Association. Researchers believe this may be the case because stressed people tend to have more cardiovascular risk factors, including smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, higher alcohol consumption and high blood pressure.

c) Shave With Caution:
The way you shave can also irritate the skin to provoke pimples to form. Depending on your skin sensitivity, you may have to find a balance between electric and safety razors.

Facts about aerobic exercise

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="330" caption="aerobic"]image[/caption]

Regular aerobic exercise can help you live longer and healthier. After all, aerobic exercise reduces health risks, keeps excess pounds at bay, strengthens your heart and boosts your mood. Healthy adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity — or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity — a week. That doesn't have to be all at one time, though. Aerobic exercise can even be done in 10-minute increments. So what are you waiting for?

For many people, walking is a great choice for aerobic exercise. In fact, walking is one of the most natural forms of exercise. It's safe, it's simple — and all it takes to get started is a good pair of walking shoes and a commitment to include aerobic exercise in your daily routine.

Of course, there's more to aerobic exercise than walking. Other popular choices include swimming, bicycling and jogging. Activities such as dancing and jumping rope count, too. Get creative

Should Doctors Wear White Coats?

Should Doctors Wear White Coats?

The Doctor's white coat has been a symbol of the profession for decades. In the 1800's and up through the early 20th Century, doctors wore street clothes while performing surgery...rolling up their sleeve
s and plunging dirty hands into patient's bodies. They often were dressed in formal black, like the clergy to reflect the solemn nature of their role. (And seeing a doctor was solemn indeed as it often led to death)

A 1989 photograph from the Mass General Hospital shows surgeons in short sleeved white coats over their street clothes and in the early 20th Century the concept of cleanliness and antisepsis was starting to take hold in American medicine. Both doctors and nurses started donning white garb as a symbol of purity. The white coat took on more and more symbolic meaning and the "White Coat Ceremony", where medical students are allowed to don the formal long white coat, has even been a right of passage with graduation from Medical School.

For the past few years, the American Medical Association and other medical societies have debated if it is time for the white coat to be retired. A study of New York City doctors in 2004 showed their ties were a source of infectious microorganisms. The NIH in Britain barred ties, lab coats, jewelry on the hands and wrists and long fingernails because of infection. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University showed bacteria from a white cotton lab coat can cause infection just minutes after touching skin. Another study reported that the majority of medical personnel change their lab coats less than once a week.

At this time there are no recommendations for doctors regarding wearing lab coats. I've not seen a good comparative study on the hazards (or benefits) of wearing the white coat. Are street clothes any more sanitary? Isn't the real issue hand washing and good hygiene from caregivers?

A number of surveys of patients show they "overwhelmingly" prefer their physicians to wear white coats. Patients seem to have more trust in and comfort with physicians who wear the coat. For many patients it is still a symbol of professionalism and good care and it helps them identify the physician.

I must admit I like my white coat. It has pockets that are filled with my needed paraphernalia and tools. It protects my clothes and when I don it, I take on a professional personae...I'm no longer a wife, mother, insecure female, or worried about (fill in the blank)...I am a doctor. It helps me shift into a professional role with focus and clarity. I know it is psychologic, but for me it works.

How To Fight Body Odor/Sweating?

How To Fight Body Odor/Sweating~

Body odor is affected by what sweat glands emit. If body odor is very unpleasant it may affect your social life. Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and may sometimes signal a more serious health problem. Although perspiration is basically odorless, it can take on an unpleasant smell when it comes into contact with bacteria on skin.

Natural Treatment~

-Take a shower using an antibacterial soap followed by a deodorant once in a day especially in the areas around the anus and the genitals.

-Use cotton clothes especially cotton undergarments, which lets the skin breathe. Avoid synthetic clothes.

-Wear loose cloths instead of figure-hugging ones and change your cloths daily.

-Washing areas under the armpits is a must as 80% of the body's sweat is present there.

-If you're buying products to handle perspiration knowing their difference is a must. For example, antiperspirants stop the sweat from leaving the skin by blocking the pores while deodorants destroy the bacteria when sweat leaves the body.

-To get rid of smelly feet, wash and dry between the feet adequately and wear well-ventilated footwear to let feet breath.

-Curb your coffee and tea intake. Caffeine can stimulate the autonomic nervous system, which regulates sweating. Limit yourself to two cups daily.

-Avoid alcohol since it increases perspiration potential by dilating blood vessels.

After your bath, add a tablespoon of honey to tepid water for the final rinse. This will help keep body odour in check.

Adding a teaspoon of alum to your bath water make you smell fresh all the day.

In summer, add a cup full of vinegar to your bath water or add a cupful of camphor oil to your bath water.

Baking soda used as a powder will absorb chemicals; therefore this will remove body odours. Use a powder puff, which has been used for talc, to apply the powder.

Boil mint leaves and add the water to your bath water. Keep some aside for a special dousing for your armpits and Drink one cup of tomato juice everyday for 1 week. The following week, Drink 1 cup of the juice, every other day. Then drink when needed.

Spray deodorant or talc after shower.

Scrub your body with some chamomile oil

Soak cotton wool pads in backing soda and powder the underarms.

Apply apple cider vinegar to eliminate under arm body odor.

Mix some baking soda with lemon juice. Rub mixture on underarms.

Use baby wipes to clean the underarms.

Apply some lemon juice on underarms after you get out of the shower to prevent the body odor.

Put 10 drops of the essential oil in 30 mm of water and apply on the underarms.

Slice a potato and wipe it under each clean and dry underarm a few times. Wait for it to dry and then apply deodorantbetween the thighs.

For excessive sweating mix dry sandalwood powder in rose water (1:1) and apply over parts where sweating is excessive.

Evaluation of patients with musculoskeletal complaints from Harrison's principles

Approach:

1.Anatomic localization of complaint (articular vs nonarticular)
2.Determination of the nature of pathologic process (inflammatory vs noninflammatory)
3.Determination of the extent of involvement (monoarticular va polyarticular, focal, widespread)
4.Determination of chronology (acute vs chronic)
5.Consider the most common disorders first
6.Formulation of a differential diagnosis.
